Countertop Fabrication: What It Really Involves

When people mention "countertop fabrication," most think it all has to do with the stone being measured and cut to size. Maybe that accounts for 10% of the work.

The fabrication process doesn't begin with stone. It starts with our taking measurements or "templating" of your home. We take a close look at every inch of your kitchen or bath so that exactly where the edges will go, how a sink needs to be cut, where a cooktop belongs, and how the faucet hole needs to be drilled. We can even create a digital layout of it all. We've been measuring, cutting, and installing countertops in El Paso since 1985, and we can tell you that every single kitchen we've measured in this town is different, even those right next door in the Eastwood area.

Once the measurements for the stone are in, you will visit our shop located on Gateway Blvd E for a closer look at how the stone is fabricated to fit your specific space. Here are the major steps involved in the fabrication of countertops:

    • We choose your natural stone and review the veins and coloration, looking for flaws that might be difficult to work around.
    • Our team inputs measurements into CNC equipment to cut your stone.
    • We cut and polish the edge of the countertop, whether you chose an eased edge or a more elaborate shape such as a beveled edge, bullnose, or ogee.
    • We cut and refine cutouts and openings for sinks, cooktops and faucets.
    • Every cut and seam are planned so that the seam is in the least obvious spot possible.
    • The stone is inspected again for any issues before we ship it.

If a countertop isn't installed correctly in your home, or if the seams are noticeable or the edge profile seems off, it is most often the case that the fabrication process was compromised. We see this in the Borderland region on a daily basis when a homeowner chooses an out-of-town countertop fabricator. Templating is not precise, cuts are less than ideal, and edges aren't smooth.

What people sometimes don't understand is that fabrication is where the quality of a countertop is determined. You can have the most beautiful stone from Brazil (that's where we get ours), but if the stone was not fabricated correctly you'll notice every imperfection for years to come. A countertop that was fabricated correctly is seamless in the home. The countertops fit snugly against the walls, the sink is installed cleanly, and the edge profile reflects light exactly as it was intended to.

That is the type of countertop our family runs daily in our shop.

The Variety of Natural Stone Available for Custom Fabrication

We cut, shape and fabricate every imaginable variety of granite and marble. We have been in business in El Paso since 1985. This makes us the region's most experienced stone fabricators. Here are the top choices we get requests for every day.

Countertops made from natural granite stone are still the number one choice for people in the city. We are able to offer an even wider palette than the big-box retailers because we source our granite stone directly from Brazil. This allows you to have choices such as deep blue and gray, exotic gold and classic colors and designs you will not find with domestic stone suppliers. Each slab is unique.

Quartz countertops make up the other large category. Engineered quartz does not require sealing and it resists stains better than almost all natural stone. We fabricate quartz for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanity tops, and even for stone dining tables. In the Eastside, families with small children will often favor quartz for just this reason.

We also fabricate marble countertops. For a bathroom vanity or a fireplace surround, there is nothing quite like marble. Marble will require a little more care than granite or quartz, but we let every customer know that up front. Still, the look is hard to beat.

These are just a couple of the stone surfaces we fabricate for customers on a regular basis:

    • Quartzite countertops for homeowners who want natural stone with excellent resistance to chips and etches
    • Dekton countertops for outdoor kitchens and other high-heat installations
    • Marble and granite shower walls for full bathroom remodels
    • Stone fireplace surrounds in granite, quartzite or marble

Typically, the correct material for your project boils down to the application. A kitchen in a Borderland house with three kids will require a very different stone than a dining room will. We will walk you through these things during your visit to our showroom, where you will be able to view full slabs of stone and compare the finishes and the feel of the surfaces in person. That is the only real way to make a stone choice.

However, we never encourage you to buy a particular material above another one. We are there to let you know what holds up well and what does not. Particularly when it comes to engineered stone, responsible fabricators adhere to the standards set out in stone fabrication health and safety guidelines for the well-being of the workers and the quality of the finished stone.

How to Prepare Before Your Template Appointment

You have chosen your stone and now you are ready to proceed. What is next? A little preparation on your part will speed up your template appointment and result in a better outcome. We have been fabricating stone countertops and stone surfaces since 1985, and in that time, we have learned that customers who prepare before the appointment are always more happy with their finished countertop.

First, have the sink and cooktop that you are buying for the job already in the building before we arrive. Not placed on the truck, but in the building. We need to measure the cutouts around the exact fixtures that you are putting into the slab at that time. If we take a template around a cooktop or a sink that you end up switching out, those cutouts will not align. This happens more often than you might think.

Here is a handy list of tasks to knock out before the template appointment:

    • Clear out your current countertops and make sure the area is clean and empty.
    • Make sure the cabinets are already installed and are level and securely fastened.
    • Have your sink, cooktop, and faucets available to show us.
    • Decide on your edge profiles and your backsplash height before the template appointment so that the measurements can be written down.
    • Keep a clear path from your front door to the kitchen or bathroom for our crew to work in.

If you still have your previous countertops installed, please inform us. In addition to the installation services, our team provides countertops removal services in El Paso. Please note that this additional service should be requested at least a week before the scheduled installation so that the removal process does not affect our scheduling and template time. Eastside homeowners typically have older tile countertops that usually take longer to remove. However, we are aware of this and will still be able to get everything done efficiently on time. Please keep this in mind when booking a countertop appointment with us.

Another thing that many El Paso homeowners do not consider is disconnecting the plumbing from the existing sink and the water lines. You do not need to have a plumber on-site; just the plumbing beneath the sink is detached before we arrive to install your new countertops. We can simply remove the sink and bring in the countertops. Contact us or visit us at our El Paso showroom on Gateway Blvd E. We are available at (915) 345-3774. We prefer responding to as many questions as possible upfront to avoid potential issues at a later date. We walk all of our Borderland homeowners through the process, as it is standard practice at COMAF.

The Fabrication and Installation Process, Step by Step

Our Borderland homeowners often wonder about the entire installation process, asking questions like: What actually occurs in-between selecting my countertop and enjoying a meal in my newly installed kitchen? What is the countertop fabrication procedure like? This is completely understandable; since we began in 1985, we have fine-tuned every aspect to deliver the finest countertop fabrication and installation service in El Paso, and each stage is. Here's a brief outline of how we approach countertop fabrication from beginning to end:

    • Purchase your slab at our showroom. Choose from our complete inventory on display at our El Paso showroom, located on Gateway Blvd E. Select your countertop from among our options, such as Brazilian granite, quartz, marble, quartzite, or Dekton. See the actual slab before you buy, rather than simply relying on an image or a small sample. Observe the veins, hues, and color variations within the material itself.
    • Take measurements. A Borderland specialist will come to your house equipped with electronic digital laser measuring equipment. We measure every angle, cutout, edge, and detail in your kitchen with extreme accuracy. Sinks, stovetops, and electrical outlets are all considered. Nothing goes undetected.
    • Cut the stone to the correct proportions. In our shop, we use that data to program our CNC machines that cut your stone slab to the proper measurements. A CNC cutter with diamond-tipped blades, submerged in a constant flow of water, ensures the cut is exact to the millimeter. Edge profiles are also shaped here; Bullnose, Beveled, Ogee, or anything else you've chosen.
    • Polish and inspect the stones. Each section of your slab is polished to the finish you ordered. Once all edges and cutouts are prepared, the pieces are dry-fitted together to the seams are aligned before they are removed from our shop.
    • Install the slabs in your residence. Your El Paso countertop specialist will bring everything to you and install it on site, ensuring the countertops are level and the seams are tight and properly bonded. Our contractor will make the necessary sink cutouts, allowing your plumbing specialist to complete their work. It normally takes one day to install a new kitchen countertop.

The complete process from initial template to final installation typically takes around seven to ten business days. Larger jobs or those with unique layouts, typically seen in homes near Kern Place in El Paso, may necessitate a few additional days. Nonetheless, we will continue to update you on all the progress until the project is complete.

And something that many homeowners are unaware of: It's in the fabrication stage that quality gets either added or subtracted. A sloppy cut creates an obvious seam. A hasty template results in wall gaps. We double-measure because we cannot fix stone the way we might a piece of lumber. You can't simply sand it down and try again. The Borderland's arid climate actually works in our favor when we install it. It means adhesives cure rapidly and reliably. It is just one fewer factor for us to keep track of.

    Inspect Your Countertops After Installation

You may have finished your countertop fabrication and installation. It looks good to go. Prior to our team packing up their tools, we do a walkthrough with you in your kitchen or bathroom. It is something we have done since 1985, and continue to do on every install, too. Here are some things you'll want to take note of once your countertops are put in place:

    • Run your hands along each seam. It shouldn't be easily detected. A quality seam is smooth and continues to line up with your stone. Anything that you catch a fingernail on, say it then.
    • Make sure the backsplash connects. The line of caulk on where your countertop meets the wall should be neat and even. There should be no holes or bubbles. It is important as the dry climate in El Paso can shrink caulk quickly if installed wrong.
    • Make sure all lower cabinet doors open and close. Even though we take precise measurements before fabrication begins, we also check for fitment after installation.
    • Test your sink and faucet. Turn the water on. Run for a minute and check for any water in your sink cutout on the bottom. Your granite countertops, quartz, marble, quartzite, Dekton, all have caulk around the cutout.
    • Inspect the topside in natural light. Circle the countertop and view from many vantage points. Most times, everything looks the same as in the showroom on Gateway Blvd E. Natural lighting is going to look different than showroom lighting, so take note.

This is what we encourage all homeowners in the Borderland to do. Don't hesitate to bring up things in the walkthrough. That is why we perform the walkthrough while you are right there.

Plus, many people don't know, it is much easier to fix chipping and sharp corners on install day. Our team comes prepared to polish all jobs around the El Paso area as we install them. We have worked the whole area from Coronado Hills to the Lower Valley, and we never skip the walkthrough.

We also encourage all our customers in the El Paso area to take pictures. It will give you a reference for yourself should you have questions or concerns at a later time. Countertops fabrication in El Paso is all about building it to last, but the photo gives you an added peace of mind.
