How El Paso's Climate Affects the Countertop You Should Choose
El Paso is a desert. That's a simple statement, but it has major implications for what you want to choose for your kitchen and bathroom countertops.
El Paso gets more than 300 days of sun a year. And that can result in UV rays and direct sunbeams streaming directly into many rooms, especially kitchens in homes near the Westside or Coronado Hills that have big windows looking south and west.
The UV rays will, over the course of years, discolor some materials. We've seen it happen countless times with homeowners who have bought a great-looking countertop that starts fading just two or three years after purchase as sun hits it. That's a disappointing end result that can be avoided.
Here's what our Borderland climate does to stone:
- Granite countertops withstand UV rays and heat very well. They do not fade or stain from UV exposure.
- Quartz countertops stand up well in indoor settings but are not ideal for sun-exposed areas in homes or outdoor kitchens.
- Quartzite countertops withstand heat and UV rays very well. It is one of the hardest countertop materials we work with.
- Dekton countertops stand up to all elements including UV exposure, extreme heat and drastic temperature swings. It is a great choice for outdoor kitchens and patios.
Another thing about this part of the world is it's dry; humidity is 20-30%. That means your new countertops don't face as much risk of water or mold damage as in other parts of the country and you have fewer worries there. And it does mean the gluing and sealing of stone countertops is a different process here. For this and many other factors, we have learned and adapted our fabrication and countertop installation process over the years. Since 1985, we've become experts in how these stones behave and react to El Paso heat and dryness.
Finally, El Paso is subject to large temperature swings, where a January morning might be 28 degrees but by afternoon you're at 60. We have to work within that 30 degree swing too. Marble countertops require a bit of extra care because marble is a softer, more responsive countertop material.
It's a lot to take into account when deciding what countertop to buy for your home, but you want to get it right the first time. Stop by our showroom on Gateway Blvd E and we'll help you make the best choice for your home. We'll also walk you through actual slabs (not samples) and help you determine what countertop will withstand our local climate best.
Choosing the Right Material for Your Kitchen or Bathroom
Selecting the type of countertop you will purchase is one of the most important countertop decisions. We go through it with every customer. Let us walk through this decision with you as if we were in front of you.
If you're cooking and you want a countertop surface that withstands heat, granite countertops do that better than any other material. You can place a hot pan directly on granite and not worry about anything happening. That matters here in El Paso where we cook big meals and host family often. Quartz countertops give you a different advantage. They don't need sealing, they resist stains, and they come in colors you won't find in natural stone. For bathrooms, we install a lot of marble countertops and bathroom vanity tops because the veining looks incredible in smaller spaces where you really notice the detail.
So how do you pick? Start with how you actually use the room.
- Heavy cooking families do well with granite or quartzite countertops because both handle heat and daily wear
- Homeowners who want low upkeep lean toward quartz countertops, no annual sealing required
- Bathroom countertops and vanity tops open the door to marble or Dekton countertops since they see less abuse than kitchens
- If you love bold patterns, natural stones we source directly from Brazil offer slabs you truly can't find at big box stores
Nine times out of ten, once people see the actual slabs in person, the decision gets easy. Photos online don't show you the depth of a quartzite slab or the way light moves through a marble surface. That's why we keep a full inventory at our Gateway Blvd E location for you to touch and compare.
We've helped Borderland families choose countertops since 1985. Being family-owned means we're not pushing whatever has the highest margin. We're telling you what works for your kitchen, your bathroom, your life. Folks over in the Eastside neighborhood bring us the same question all the time: "What's going to last?" The honest answer depends on your habits, your budget, and what makes you smile when you walk into the room. But we'll get you to the right slab, that's what we do best.
Signs Your Countertops Need Replacing, Not Just Repairing
You notice a crack near your sink. Or maybe the surface just looks tired, no matter how much you clean it. So you wonder: can we fix this, or is it time for new countertops?
We get that question almost every day. Sometimes a repair makes perfect sense. A small chip in granite or a minor seam separation can often be fixed without pulling anything out. But there are clear signs that tell us a repair won't hold.
Here's what we tell El Paso homeowners to watch for:
- Cracks that keep growing. A hairline crack near a cooktop or sink cutout that spreads over weeks means the slab has structural stress. Filling it buys you months, not years.
- Deep staining that won't lift. Laminate and older stone surfaces absorb liquids over time. If coffee, wine, or oil has soaked through the seal, no amount of poultice will pull it out completely.
- Burn marks or heat damage. Many laminate countertops in older Eastside and Lower Valley homes display burn rings, particularly from pans that were directly placed on the surface. The damage penetrates below the surface layer.
- Warping or lifting at the seams. The humidity associated with El Paso's monsoon season as well as everyday kitchen use can warp the substrate material underneath a laminate countertop. Once the surface starts to buckle, the integrity of the whole section has failed.
- Visible mold along edges or near plumbing. The presence of dark spots along the countertop edge, particularly at the joint where the backsplash meets the countertop, can indicate that standing water is trapped below the surface.
Nine times out of ten, homeowners calling us about a "small fix" actually have two or three of these problems present at the same time. That's what we consider the tell.
A single issue is a repair, but multiple issues stacked on top of each other signals the end of the countertop's usable lifespan.
Countertops in the Borderland are subjected to hard water conditions and intense desert heat, which really takes its toll on materials, especially laminate and tile in older homes. We've been around since 1985 and have seen countless countertops that homeowners repaired time and time again before finally going ahead and replacing them. Every one of those homeowners told us they wished they'd made the change sooner. If your countertops exhibit any of the signs mentioned above, it's worth it to get a replacement, both on a financial basis and with a reduction in overall stress. Contact us or call (915) 345-3774, and we'll be frank about the condition of your countertops and if replacement or repair is the right move.

(915) 345-3774What to Expect on Installation Day
This is the most commonly asked question. Good news: It really isn't that complicated.
When we come to your home for an installation, your countertops are already cut to your specifications and polished. We do all the fabrication work in our shop prior to the installation day itself, so there will be no cutting the stone in your kitchen, or even dust in your living room! Everything is pre-cut to your exact measurements.
Installation generally happens the way you see below:
- We put down floor protection and cabinet coverage.
- We dry fit all the pieces to confirm the placement of seams.
- Minor on-site adjustments if necessary.
- Adhesive is used to install the slab along with a seam bonding process to complete.
- Openings for your sink and cooktop are cut, and then the fixtures are set.
- We complete final clean up before you walk away. We do not leave until we complete a final walkthrough with you.
Most countertop installers can do an installation for El Paso homeowners in one day. Standard kitchen projects usually take three to five hours. Installation for more substantial countertops that also require an island, or for multi-bathroom vanity tops, might take a bit longer. Regardless, we will let you know what the expected schedule will be before ever coming to your home.
Nine times out of ten, homeowners are surprised at how quickly we can complete your countertops.
We often hear from Eastside and Mission Valley residents: "Do I need to be home for the installation?" Yes, we would love to have you here! That way you can view the newly-installed countertops and point out any details you'd like before we clean up the debris and pack up. We have been doing this since 1985, and the last walk-through is just as each and every time. It is exactly what maintains our reputation as a family-operated business in the Borderland area.
So, what do you do the evening before the install? Remove every last thing from your old counters, and disconnect your sink if you feel confident doing so or let us take care of it. Also, make sure you have a clear path from your entry door to the kitchen. Our slabs are very heavy; some of our granite and quartzite slabs weigh more than 400 pounds per piece.

Prepping Your House in Advance of the Installation Crew
A little preparation goes a long way. We have been installing countertops in El Paso homes since 1985, and the smoothest experiences come from homeowners who simply take the time 30 minutes the evening before to get things ready.
First, remove any and all appliances or accessories from your old countertops; we are talking about your dish drainer, knife rack, and all those coffee makers or food processors that have not left the countertop in years. Then remove any and all items from the cabinets that will be replaced or directly beneath the ones we will be replacing. Our crew needs to have unimpeded access to your base cabinets and we want to that no one's dishes are damaged or exposed to excessive amounts of dust.
In addition to the above steps, consider the following to a quick and smooth install:
- Disconnect your sink and cooktop if you can; if you cannot, just let us know, and we can take care of it.
- Create a path from the entryway to where the new countertops are being installed (usually the kitchen or bathroom). We carry stone slabs, sometimes weighing 400 pounds or more.
- Move any rugs, pets gates, etc., from the path of our travel.
- Keep the pets out of the work zone. I am a huge dog fan, but the combo of an open entryway and a heavy granite slab may not work out well.
- Park your vehicles so that our truck has a short path to your home. The shorter the path we carry stone, the better.
9 times out of 10, homeowners who take the time the evening before to prepare their homes end up with an installation that is an hour shorter or more than it could have been if they do not take the time to do so. It is a fact.
One other thing people do not always remember. We do do trimming, cutting or fitting when needed, and that does kick up some dust, so, if you have a computer, or home office nearby, or just sensitive items, cover or close off any items that we will be cutting and that do not need to be exposed to the dust. We carry our own equipment and we can clean up, but just do whatever you can to cover or block those items from any dust.
We also take care of the removal of your old countertops as part of this process, but just be sure to give us the space to take them off. We have done thousands of countertop removals throughout the Borderland and how to remove the old countertops and materials without hurting your cabinets or walls. Just allow us to do what we do to remove the countertops for your new countertops installation.
